Lisbon school seeks host families for international students

LISBON – Lisbon Central School will host a meeting on Feb. 7 in advance of accepting international students for the 2013-2014 school year.

“We want to see what the interest is,” board of education President Blake P. Gendebien said.

The meeting will be designed to answer questions potential host families may have about the program.

“The number of students is going to be based on the number of host families,” Mr. Gendebien said.

While Lisbon has hosted foreign exchange students in the past, next year will be the first time the district accepts international students who will be charged tuition.

Superintendent Erin E. Woods said the program will provide a jumping-off point for students who want to attend an American university.

Lisbon is looking to bring only high-achieving students to the school, and they will be enrolled for one year.

But they can’t come unless host families volunteer to house them.

Mr. Gendebien said he hopes to help potential host families better understand the program at the Feb. 7 meeting.

The goal is to bring two to five students to Lisbon the first year and gauge the success of the program.

“Probably after the first year we’ll have a better understanding of it,” Mr. Gendebien said.

The school in March will begin reviewing applications for international students who want to study in Lisbon in the fall.

The Feb. 7 meeting will take place at 6 p.m. in the school auditorium.
