One night after the OFA Boys posted an impressive victory over Malone, the Lady Devils followed suit with their best performance of the season in a 60-47 nonleague win over Carthage on Wednesday and a sweep over the Class A Comets of the Frontier League
The Lady Devils secured their win by patiently executing all the options of their press-breaker to score 25 points in the fourth quarter and answer the defense-defying pull-up jump-shooting of SUNY Albany-bound lead guard Zakiya Saunders who scored 14 of her game-high 27 points in the quarter.
Felicia Barr countered with an 11-point fourth quarter where she sank 5-6 free throws to lead an 11-12 team showing. Barr finished with an 18-point on 6-8 shooting, 12-rebound double-double and Riley Luckie (4 assists) netted a team-high 17 points. The south-paw sniper scored eight points leading the Devils to a 19-9 first quarter lead, went 6-7 from the foul line and buried a pair of ideally timed three-pointers from the deep corner in the third quarter.
This was definitely our best game of the season. We got stuck a few times on offense but we overcame it and moved the ball very well to get Felicia Barr and Susie Morow chances inside. Shannon Tooley had a lot to do with that she just knows where everybody is all the time, said OFA Coach Lynn Blevins.
Zakiya Saunders is probably the most talented player we will see all season and Meg Dodge played great defense on her. Meg made her work for her points and her defense in the first quarter set the tone for the game.
Dodge went 4-4 from the foul line in the fourth quarter scoring nine points with six assists to complement her defensive effort. Susie Morrow scored eight points on 4-7 shooting, Shannon Tooley added four points with 10 rebounds and Courtney Sherwin scored the last four points of the game.
Kendra Baker tallied 10 points for the Comets who struggled to convert three-point looks created by Saunders kickout passes.
OFA JV Coach Jade Vernsey also credited her team for its best of the year after a high-scoring 59-51 loss to Carthage.
We scored a lot of points and we played very aggressively on defense, said Coach Vernsey.
Taylor Perry led the Devils with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals and scored seven in the Devils 20-point first quarter. Erin Tooley delivered a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double, Danielle Guimond and Kristen Snyder followed with 10 and six points and Kiera Johnson snatched five steals and passed out four assists. Zooie Colbert tallied a game-high 21 points for Carthage with nine in the fourth.Salmon River 45, Malone 42: Balanced scoring led by Abby Kellys 13 points keyed the Shamrocks (10-3, 6-3) win over the Huskies (8-4, 5-4). Morgan Fountain scored 16 for Malone while Janelle Heden added 10.
