The City Council passed two resolutions Monday supporting home rule legislation to enable St. Lawrence County legislators to raise the sales tax.
The council voted six-to-one to support St. Lawrence County resolutions urging local representatives to enter bills in the New York State Assembly and Senate to give the county the authority to increase the sales tax from three to four percent.
The council also threw its support behind a county resolution urging state legislators to support the bills.
Ogdensburg passed the measures after a face-to-face meeting with county legislators last week. At the meeting, legislators promoted a five-year plan to use the increased sales tax revenues to lower property taxes and replenish the county fund balance.
The council approved the resolutions with the caveat that county legislators follow through with that plan.
