HAMMOND - Hammond turned a setback at the OFA Ben Cordwell Tournament Championship game into a lesson learned in gaining a two game lead in the NAC West Division with a commanding 55-25 win over Heuvelton on Monday.
We came out with a lot better intensity tonight. We played very well as a team. It was just a good night for Hammond basketball, said Hammond coach Shawn Dack after his Red Devils (8-1, 6-0 NAC West) swept the Junior Varsity (48-42 win) action.Our JVs are mainly seventh and eighth graders and they are working very hard to improve on last season.
In the varisty contest, Alyssa Crosby generated 12 of her 25 points in the fourth quarter to put an exclamation point on the night after Hammond took a 10-2 first quarter lead, led 21-2 at the half and outscored Heuvelton 22-9 in the fourth after Heuvelton won the third 14-12. Crosby scored six in the first quarter and Gabby Marshall added six of her 12 in the second quarter for Hammond. Cassie Whalen added seven and Mikayla Horton chipped in five points.
Alexis Weidner scored 10 points for Heuvelton (7-3, 5-2 NAC West) while Olivia St. Pierre added seven and Ashlyn Piercey chipped in five.
In JV play, Paige Frisina scored 15 points, Aly Crosby added 13 and Sierra Fleming scored 10 leading the Red Devils. Paige McCormick generated 18 for Heuvelton JVs. Nathalie Barr added eight and Warren and Alex Steele chipped in six and five.
Lisbon 49, Morristown 24: Emily Dishaw generated a career game 22 points including three three-pointers and 7-8 free throw shooting to key the host Lady Knights (5-5, 3-4 NAC West) past the Rockets (0-9, 0-7 NAC West). Jackie Sovie generated 13 points while Alex Amo added six. Karissa Bertrand scored 10 and Jordyn Tulley added seven for Morristown.
Harrisville 40, H-D 31: A 18-12 fourth quarter sealed the win for visiting Harrisville (5-4, 4-4 NAC West) over Hermon-DeKalb (4-3, 3-3) .
Harrisville just executed an excellent 1-3-1 matchup zone defense and we didnt shoot well, said H-D coach Steve Morrill.
Chelsea Pierce generated 12 points, Kathleen Coloney added 11 and Janel Swanson scored eight points for Harrisville. Hannah Weaver added five. Brittany Rust scored 12 points for H-D and Clarissa Davis and Courtney Harrington each scored seven.
Clifton-Fine 72, E-K 32: The visiting Eagles (6-3, 4-3 NAC West) ran out to a 21-7 lead after the first quarter against the Cougars (1-7, 1-5 NAC West). Hunter Hitchman generated 23 points, seven boards, six steals and eight assists to pace Clifton-Fine. Alexis Pomerville tallied 20 points, seven boards, four assists and three steals while Morgan Skeldon added 15 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and two steals.
Kaylee Sharpstene scored 11 with three threes and Katie Smith chipped in 10 for Edwards-Knox.
