Madill nears completion, Kennedy progressing

Construction at Madill Elementary School is nearing completion while an expansion at Kennedy Elementary School is progressing quickly, said Superintendent Timothy M. Vernsey.

“At Madill school we are actually in the process of going over what they call a punch list,” Mr. Vernsey said.

A “punch list,” he explained, is just an overview of the cosmetic touches the building needs.

“There may be some things in the spring, regarding the grounds, which we have to touch up,” Mr. Vernsey said. “Pretty minor types of things.”

At Kennedy Elementary School construction has progressed throughout the winter months.

“They have been working on the steel,” Mr. Vernsey said. “We’re hoping they get the building wrapped so they can start working on the inside of it in the next few weeks.”

But Mr. Vernsey cautioned that construction at Kennedy is entirely dependent on the weather at this point.

The schools were renovated as part of a district wide $57.2 million building project.

Mr. Vernsey also said the administration is still mulling over a possible closure of Sherman Elementary School a year ahead of schedule.

“We’re still doing an analysis of that,” he said, adding that he will be presenting a recommendation to the Board of Education within the next several weeks.

The closure of Sherman could see savings totaling $100,000, Mr. Vernsey said.

Both Sherman and Lincoln Elementary Schools are scheduled to be closed at following the 2013-2014 school year, with students moving to Kennedy.
