CANTON - OFA’s margin for error disappeared midway through Wednesday’s Northern Conference Wrestling match at Canton when Golden Bear freshman Ryan Brown won a 4-2 triple overtime decision to hand the Blue Devils’ 99-pound eighth grade standout Tanner Lapiene his first loss of the season.

“Tanner beat Ryan by a technical fall earlier this season but they have gone at it pretty good back and forth over the years. It was a very good match,” said OFA Coach Bill Mitchell after the Devils climbed to 4-0 with a 40-36 victory.

“After Tanner’s match I figured we would be getting two forfeits and I expected Bailey Phelps would win at 145. So we needed two other wins in between. Brady Sheppard wrestled well and Austin Lalonde came through in a match that I figured could go either way.”

Sheppard methodically registered a 12-9 decision over Steve Woods at 106 pounds, Lalonde delivered a first period fall over Zach McDonald and Phelps overcame a game effort by Alex Dean at 145 to secure a fall with 1:21 remaining in the third period to set the stage for Nate Murdock to receive a forfeit in the final bout of the night at 152. Adam Rickett received forfeit at 126 pounds.

Canton received a forfeit to Jon Fetcie at 113 pounds, a 7-4 decision by Justin Foster over Josh Wangler at 132 pounds and a pin by Cody Bond over Glynn Breen at 138 pounds to keep its hopes alive.

The teams volleyed wins in the first half of the match with OFA’s Cody David decisioning Jared Caskinette 4-2 in the leadoff 160-pound bout. Canton countered with pins by Nate Moose (170) and Alan Clement (182) over Allen Smithers and Justin Pratt, the Devils’ Andrew Cole remained unbeaten in NAC competition with a 12-1 decision over Thomas Lumbard and Nate Sarkin registered a 1:10 fall over Gabe Latimer in the 285-pound division.

In modified action Cordell David won two matches for OFA and Isaiah Compo and Gurjot Grewal each won one match. Tyson Luge went 2-0 for Canton.
