The state Department of Environmental Conservation is advising visitors to the backcountry of the Adirondack Mountains to be prepared for snow, ice and cold, and to use proper equipment.
According to DEC, much of the area has received more than a foot of snow, and visitors should walk the area only with snowshoes or cross-country skis. The use of those items is said to reduce injuries and prevent falls.
In addition to dressing warmly and bringing supplies while traveling, visitors are advised to call the department at 1 (518) 897-1200 to learn trail conditions. More information about the trails can be found at www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7865.html.
