MASSENA - Massena Public Library officials want to see if the community will support a yoga program at their facility.

Library Director Elaine Dunne-Thayer said that’s among their upcoming activities they’re planning as 2013 rolls in.

“In keeping with New Year’s resolutions, we’ll start offering yoga classes,” she said.

Marie Kirwan will offer Kripalu Yoga, a form of Hatha Yoga using inner focus, meditation, standard yoga poses, breathwork, “development of a quiet mind” and relaxation. Kripalu emphasizes “following the flow” of prana, or “life-force energy, compassionate self-acceptance, observing the activity of the mind without judgment, and taking what is learned into daily life.”

Sessions will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 7, 14, 21 and 28 in the BOCES room at the Massena Public Library.

“We have this beautiful BOCES room. We’d like it to be utilized a little more,” Ms. Dunne-Thayer said.

The classes will be an experiment of sorts.

“We’ll see how we go. We’ll see what kind of crowd we get,” she said.

The Friends of the Massena Public Library will also be starting the new year by gearing up for another winter book sale on Feb. 6.

“It’s a valentine-themed winter book sale,” Ms. Dunne-Thayer said. “They have a new group in charge. They have been very successful the last couple of sales.”

Also upcoming is the Massena Winter Carnival, and she said the Massena Public Library will have a hand in that.

“In celebration of the Massena Winter Carnival we’re partnering again with the Nature center. We’re doing a Storywalk at the Nature Center on Jan. 26,” she said.

That will be held along with two other events that day at the Nature Center. A doggie winter fashion show begins at 10 a.m., followed by a doggie winter hike at 11 a.m. The Storywalk begins at noon.

In the children’s room, meanwhile, Youth Services Library Assistant Kimberly Holmes will be holding a Mad Scientist Day” on Jan. 19.

“It’s a two-hour workshop,” Ms. Dunne-Thayer said. “They’ll be doing different fun science experiments.”
