CANTON — The SUNY Canton men’s hockey team will be under the direction of interim coach for the remainder of the season.

Pat Martin is replacing Carl Michaelson, who was hired in September, and brings a long connection to the Roos’ program.

In his 13th year at the college, Martin is currently SUNY Canton’s assistant athletic director and compliance coordinator. He previously served as the men’s ice hockey coach for seven seasons.

During his tenure, SUNY Canton qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association national championship tournament three times, including the championship game in 2001-02.

He was named coach of the year in Region 3 following his final season and has coached many All-Region and All-American players.

Before taking over the program, Martin was an assistant coach for three years and helped SUNY Canton win its 15th national championship in 1999-00.

SUNY Canton has an overall record of 5-11 this season.

Martin has also had several other impressive coaching stints, including the Can-Am Islanders, a Junior B team; the Cortland Bantams, who won the 1997 State and national championship; and the men’s Adirondack team in the Empire State Games, where he has served as director of ice hockey operations.

Martin, who was named compliance coordinator in 2011 when the college transitioned to the NCAA, graduated from SUNY Cortland, and played hockey for the Red Dragons for three seasons.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Clarkson 70, Juniata 66

Clarkson shot 59 percent in the second half to come back from a 10-point halftime deficit and defeated Juniata in the first round of the St. John Fisher Holiday Tournament at Rochester.

Jerry Coleman scored a team-high 21 points, which included five 3-point field goals, and grabbed five rebounds for the Golden Knights (7-1), who will play Baruch in the championship game at 3 today.

John Coleman contributed 17 points, five rebounds and five steals, while Marques Charlton added 18 points.

Brian Scholly made seven 3-pointers, finishing with 27 points on 10-for-15 shooting, for Juniata (8-3).

WELLS 74, SUNY CANTON 63

Jonathan Hurtado led all scorers with 18 points as the Express beat the Kangaroos in the opening round of the SUNY Brockport Holiday Tournament in Brockport.

Ryan Hood added 11 points for Wells (5-5). which will play host SUNY Brockport in the championship.

Khalid Vaughn and Xzavier Fisher each added 16 points for SUNY Canton (2-7), which will face Pittsburgh-Bradford at noon.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

BOWDOIN 66, CLARKSON 35

Kaitlin Donahue scored 20 points and Kirsten Prue added 17 as the Polar Bears (4-4) beat the short-handed Golden Knights in the first round of the Bowdoin Holiday Invitational in Brunswick, Maine.

Ashley Loggins scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Colleen Daley added nine points and eight rebounds for Clarkson (2-5), which suited just six players, all freshmen.
