ALEXANDRIA BAY - The St. Lawrence Central boys hockey team skated to its second championship of the season on Saturday after gaining a 2-1 decision over Plattsburgh High in the title game of the Islanders Holiday Tournament at the Alexandria Bay Municipal Arena.

“This was a different kind of game than we’ve been involved with lately. It was a really good defensive game for both teams,” noted coach Mickey Locke after the Larries improved to 6-2 overall with a hard-fought non-league victory over the Hornets.

In an NAC Interdivisional game played Saturday Massena downed Malone 3-1.

SLC 2 - PHS 1: All-Tournament Team selection Lukas Arquiett opened the scoring at 2:58 of the second period when he finished off a play set up by Kody Kocsis and Ian Lynch. Arquiett then drew the lone assist on the eventual game-winner just 19 seconds into the third by Lynch.

Plattsburgh cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 3:20 mark on an unassisted goal by John Fine-Lease.

Tournament MVP Nate McLaughlin turned aside 18 of the shots to backstop the win while Robbie Knowles posted 22 saves in the losing cause.

The Larries, who downed the Islanders and Norwood-Norfolk in capturing top honors at their annual Christmas Tournament last weekend, return to their NAC Division II schedule this coming Saturday when they head to F Salmon River starting at 6:30 p.m.

Massena 3 - Malone 1: Zach Robert sparked Massena to a 2-0 first period lead setting up a Grayson Phillips’ goal in the third minute and then scoring unassisted with just 35.5 seconds remaining.

Robert completed a three-point night by setting up Tyler Young and a 3-0 lead midway through the second period. Trevor Cooley scored the lone goal for Malone (4-1-1, 3-1-1 NAC) which received 37 saves from Joey Brown. Connor Paquin handled 15 shots for Massena (5-3-0, 3-1-0 NAC) allowing only a goal by Trevor Cooley with 40.2 seconds remaining in the middle stanza.
