Lynch sparks St. Lawrence comeback

ALEXANDRIA BAY — Ian Lynch tallied two goals and an assist, including scoring the game-winning goal in the third period as St. Lawrence rallied past the host Islanders, 5-4, in the opening round of the Islanders Holiday Tournament on Friday.

Luke Arquiett chipped in with a goal and two assists for St. Lawrence (5-1).

Goalie Nate Mclaughlin made 28 saves for the Larries, who advance to today’s title game against Plattsburgh, a 3-0 winner over Hilton.

Kyle Delaney scored two goals and Jordan VanBrocklin tallied a goal and an assist for the Islanders (3-4).

Islanders goalie Cole James finished with 26 saves.

POTSDAM 2, WEST GENESEE 1 (OT)

Chad Varney scored the deciding goal in overtime and also had an assist to lift the Sandstoners to victory in a nonleague game.

Devin Crary made 31 saves to register the win for Potsdam.

Patrick Brynes made 30 saves for West Genesee (5-4-1).

VOLLEYBALL

BEAVER RIVER 3, CARTHAGE 0

Gen Fidler registered 17 service points, including nine aces, to pace the Beavers to a crossover triumph in the Frontier League.

Melissa Hunt contributed eight service points, five kills and 13 digs for Beaver River (5-2), which won by scores of 25-14, 25-23, 25-19.

Keegan Bowman chipped in with eight service points, 10 assists and two blocks for the Beavers.

Courtney Cunningham totaled eight kills for Carthage (6-2, 5-2), and Cassie Birth chipped in with 10 digs and eight service points.

LOWVILLE PLACES FOURTH

All-tournament member Haley Riley served up 17 points, including five aces, and totaled 60 kills and 41 digs as the Red Raiders went 6-6 on the day to take fourth place in their division at the Canastota Tournament.

Tasha Widrick recorded 64 assists for Lowville and Rachael White contributed 24 points, including six aces, and 38 kills.

WRESTLING

LEWIS COUNTY DUALS

Mike Duffer was selected as Lowville’s most outstanding wrestler as he led the Red Raiders to a second-place finish at the Lewis County Duals at Copenhagen.

Lowville went 4-1 on the day, as did Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, but the Red Devils, led by MOW Jared Fiacco, won the title by virtue of a 46-42 win over the Red Raiders in the fourth round.

Copenhagen, led by Najib Quinones, went 3-2 to finish in third place, with Illion (Laken Cook, MOW) fourth.

Skaneateles (Josh Brillo, MOW) finished fifth, with Beaver River (Travis Edwards, MOW) sixth and South Lewis (Nick Kraeger, MOW) seventh.
