CANTON A Norfolk woman has been charged in connection with the theft of a portable television set from a drug store in the village earlier this month, village police said Friday, with public input cited as a key factor in locating the suspect.
The reaction was kind of overwhelming, the number of responses we received indicating the identity of the individual, Canton Police Chief Victor N. Rycroft said. Within the first three hours we received nine calls, and eight identified the subject.
That subject was Ellie Lee Murray, 35, of Marsh Road, who was charged Friday with petit larceny
Ms. Murray stole a TV worth $140 from a Kinney Drugs store on Dec. 8, police said.
On Dec. 21, Canton Police released to the media surveillance images from the store in an effort to identify a suspect seen in the footage. Following the first days calls, several more people contacted police the next day, Chief Rycroft said, all of them identifying Ms. Murray as the person seen in surveillance photos.
Two days later, Ms. Murray contacted police and agreed to meet with officers upon her return to St. Lawrence County from a holiday trip, Chief Rycroft said.
She is scheduled to appear in Canton Town Court on Jan. 9 to answer the charges.
