MASSENA — A Massena man arrested by three different police agencies in a 24-hour period Dec. 18 was sent to St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, accused in the third incident of violating an order of protection.

Village police charged Derek J. Hammill, 20, of 50 Westwood Drive, with a felony count of first-degree criminal contempt after he allegedly violated a temporary order of protection held by his estranged wife, Casey L. Hammill, 17, by sending her 95 text messages and calling her cellphone approximately 25 times on Dec. 18.

He was arraigned that day by Town Justice Gerald P. Sharlow and sent to the county jail in lieu of $5,000 bail or $10,000 bond.

He acknowledged that he had violated the order of protection moments after he was released following his arraignment on a fourth-degree stalking charge early that morning in Potsdam Village Court.

Mr. Hammill said Potsdam police officers gave him a ride from court back to his vehicle parked on Main Street in the village.

“As soon as I got into my car, I texted Casey about her statement to the Potsdam Police Department that led to me getting arrested,” Mr. Hammill said.

He said he was stopped by a Norfolk town police officer at 12:44 p.m. and cited with numerous traffic violations and misdemeanor charges including third-degree fleeing an officer in a police vehicle, trespassing and reckless driving.

Mr. Hammill was arraigned in Norfolk Town Court and sent to the county jail with bail set at $2,000.

He posted bail that afternoon but then was transferred to the Massena Police Department, which had a warrant for his arrest on the felony contempt count.
