Madrid: Barbara L. Carkner, 86, passed away on Wednesday Dec. 26, 2012 under the care of Hospice and surrounded by her loving family. “Bobbie” as she was fondly known by was born on August 29, 1926 in Canton, NY the daughter of Edward and Marguerite (Ward) Bushaw. She attended Madrid Schools and married H. Bernard “Bernie” Carkner on October 19, 1946 in St. John’s Rectory. Mr. Carkner predeceased her on Dec. 29, 2011, after 65 years of marriage. She worked at Holmes Grocery Store in Madrid, NY for 30 years. Bobbie was a communicant and member of the Altar Rosary Society of St. John the Baptist Church, Seaway Valley Senior Citizens, and Madrid American Legion Auxiliary #1513. Bobbie enjoyed crocheting and tending to her grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Timothy P. of Burke, NY: Loretta L. Carkner of Norwood, NY, John B. and wife Silindia of Walworth, NY: Thomas E. and wife Michelle of Madrid: seven grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren, a brother Ward Bushaw of Robertsdale, AL, a brother in-law Jerry Haney of Madrid, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son Kenneth Carkner in 1980 a daughter Gretchen L. Carkner in 2003, and her sisters, Helen Cline, Jean Dodd, Irene Kirby, and Betty Haney. Memorial contributions may be made out to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley or to a charity of one’s choice. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012 at St. John the Baptist Church in Madrid. Interment will follow in Madrid Cemetery.
