CANTON — Flames damaged a home in the village on Friday afternoon, and officials were still looking for the cause later in the day.

“It’s going to be a few days,” Canton Fire Chief Robert M. Crowe said. The smoky blaze at 15 Spears St. was reported at 12:50 p.m.

Owner Taylor Ellis was at home at the time and escaped the fire, Chief Crowe said. Mr. Ellis was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation but not hospitalized.

Fire, police and National Grid crews were dispatched to the ranch-style residence, where first responders arrived to find flames and thick smoke billowing from the front of the single-story structure.

While there was no structural damage, the home sustained extensive smoke and heat damage, Chief Crowe said. Firefighters were able to knock down the flames within minutes, the chief said, but dousing “hot spots” and the investigation kept crews on the scene for nearly three hours.
