MASSENA Two parking spaces on Andrews Street between the crosswalk and the entrance to the Massena Fire Department parking lot make pulling out of that lot a hazard during high-traffic hours, fire department officials say.
Carissa and Susan Kirkey pointed out the visibility issue at Tuesdays village Board of Trustees meeting. Carissa was recently involved in a car accident as she was trying to make a left turn out of the lot. Susan said her daughter was creeping out to see if any car was in the westbound lane when she was hit.
Pulling out of there is a complete hazard, Susan said. Does there have to be a fatality before anything is done?
Fire Department officials agreed with the Kirkeys, saying they have had issues pulling out of the lot for years because of those spaces.
It is difficult to pull out even with a firetruck, Fire Driver in Charge Ken McGowan said. Weve been talking about it for years.
Chief Thomas Miller said the Fire Department would support any effort to remove those parking spaces, which are located in front of Curves on Andrews Street.
Having worked there for 20 years, I can say getting out of (that lot) is horrible, especially around three, four oclock, Mr. Miller said.
Police Chief Timmy J. Currier has looked at the traffic issue and believes the best course of action is to move the crosswalk to the location of the parking spaces.
However, Department of Public Works Superintendent Hassan A. Fayad said he believes the most likely course of action is to block the space closest to the parking lot entrance.
