GOUVERNEUR - A very consistent defensive effort allowed the Ogdensburg Free Academy Girls Basketball team to weather two-point third quarter in besting Gouverneur 43-29 in the NAC Central Division opener for both teams on Tuesday.
We really struggled on offense in the third quarter but we turned it around in the fourth. Susie Morrow got some key steals and scored eight points in the fourth quarter where we scored 15, said OFA Coach Lynn Blevins who will have his 1-1 team at home on Friday to host Malone which won its division opener over Potsdam in overtime.
Overall we are playing very good defense right now and our seniors, Shannon Tooley and Felicia Barr, did a very nice job tonight holding things together.
Morrow finished with a game-high 13 points and seven rebounds, Barr tallied 10 points with nine rebounds and Tooley netted six points with three steals.
Meg Dodge tallied seven points with three steals and Riley Luckie and Courtney Sherwin added five and two points.
Kirstin Roberts, the MVP of the Morristown Tournament on Saturday, led Gouverneur with 10 points.
The OFA JVs won their season opener over the Wildcats.
Malone 52, Potsdam 50: The visiting Lady Huskies scored the final four points of regulation to survive a battle of free throws down the stretch. Sarah Vivlamore sparked the Lady Sandstoners offensively with a career-high 27-point night that included five three-pointers and Shanielle Chambers tallied 17.
Janelle Heden anchored the winning offense with 16 points, including a pair of threes and Meghan OConnor and Rachel Lamica chipped in 11 points apiece.
Canton 61, Salmon River 44: Emma Rexford tallied 29 points to lead the winning effort. Kali Frank added nine points followed by Katie Christy and Tori Daley with eight points each.
Kwiio King netted a team-high 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds for SR and Abby Kelly added 15 points and eight rebounds.
