Massena girls hockey team halts Alexandria; Salmon River ties Saranac Lake

Massena Central turned back Alexandria 4-2 while Salmon River Central settled for a 2-2 tie with Saranac Lake in High School Girls Hockey matchups on Friday.

Massena 4, Alexandria 2: At the Massena Arena, as the Lady Raiders made a strong recovery from a dramatic season-opening overtime loss to Canton.

The Purple Ghosts struck first when Molly Russell connected from Jessica Prance just 4:26 into the game but Massena pulled even with 4:06 left in the opening period after Mackenzie Youngs finished off a play set up by Abbie Paquin.

Alexandria regained the lead at 2:48 of the second period when Molly Aznoe converted from Mikayla Kolb and Kiah Hudon. The Lady Raiders knotted the score just 1:12 later on a goal by Rachel Davis that was assisted by Katie MacCuaig. The same combination put Massena ahead 7:57 into the third period before MacCuaig clinched the win by scoring into an empty-net with 10 seconds left in regulation after taking a pass from Davis.

Maddi Dillabough made 13 saves in the winning effort while Samantha Griswold kept the game close with a stellar 38-save performance.

Now 1-1 on the season, the Lady Raiders are slated to host Saranac Lake next Wednesday at the Massena Arena starting at 5:15 p.m.

Salmon River 2, Saranac Lake 2 (OT): At Fort Covington, the Lady Shamrocks built a 2-0 lead through the first two periods before the Red Storm rallied to tie the game in the third.

Victory Thompson opened the scoring for Salmon River at the 6:25 mark of the first period assisted by Emily Tremblay and Molly Brockway. Jenna Thompson made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal at 11:41 of the second period.

Kennedy Snyder put Saranac Lake on the board just 1:39 into the third off an assists from Bridget Sullivan before Sidney Battistoni tied the game with an unassisted goal at the 7:15 mark.

Becca Leroux made 24 saves working the Salmon River crease while Katey Snyder handled 18 shots for the Red Storm (0-0-1).

The Lady Shamrocks (1-0-1) return to action on Monday at home to Beekmantown starting at 6 p.m.

Beekmantown 7, SLC 2: In a game played on Thursday, Brandi Thomas netted a goal and helped set up the other by Madee Derouchie as the Lady Larries fell short to host Beekmantown.
