POTSDAM – The Red Cross is celebrating the Thanksgiving season with an enticing deal: donate blood and be entered in a raffle for a $50 grocery shopping trip.
They can use it towards any groceries for their Thanksgiving feast, said Marketing Program Director, Kristina Schanz.
The promotion has been dubbed the Turkey-A-Day Giveaway and is being run throughout New York state and north western Pennsylvania.
Anyone who gives blood to the Red Cross will be entered into the raffle.
One gift card is being given out every day.
Its a monthly promotion we are doing for the month of November, said Ms. Schanz.
We pull a random winner for each day, she added.
Jessica Colson, account manager with Blood Services for Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties, said blood donors are responding well to the promotion.
Ms. Schanz agreed.
Speaking based on anecdotal evidence, Ms. Schanz said, Id say just in the past few weeks, with [Hurricane Sandy], we have seen an increase in donors.
Ms. Schanz said the Turkey-A-Day promotion has helped sustain the spike.
Maureen Wellman, manager of the Red Cross Communications Department for the region, said the incentive program has been running throughout the month of November for the past several years.
Its a nice incentive, she said. Its a nice thank you to donors.
The program will end at the end of November.
Anyone who wants to schedule a blood donation can call the Red Cross at 1-800-RED CROSS.
Who wouldnt want a free turkey? asked Ms. Wellman.
