Watertown, NY - Mary Louise Hayes, 94, formerly of 658 South Hamilton St., passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2012, at Life Care Center at Inverrary, Lauderhill, FL where she had resided since June 2009.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown, on Thursday, October 25, from 11AM - 1PM. A prayer service will follow at 1:15PM at the funeral home, then the funeral mass celebrated at Holy Family Church at 2PM with Rev. Steven Murray, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

Mary was born on March 11, 1918 in Watertown to the late Henrietta (Quinn) and William Strauss. She was a graduate of Watertown High School.

She married Richard W. Close in 1943 at Camp Rucker, and he was killed in action in France during WWII in 1944. On June 28, 1947 she married Lewis R. Hayes in the rectory of Holy Family Church, and he died January 5, 2004.

Mary enjoyed gardening with her husband, the New York Yankees, reading, baking, summers on the St. Lawrence River, and writing many letters to her friends and family. She also enjoyed volunteering at the gift shop at Mercy Hospital for many years.

She worked at the New York Air Brake and also spent time helping out at the family business of Halley Electric all while being a homemaker. Mary was also Past President of the Watertown Lioness Club. For many years Mary and Lew spent their winter months in Zephyrhills, FL.

Mrs. Hayes is survived by her four children, Thomas & Jude Hayes of Locust, NC, Sally & Fred Siembab of Tamarac, FL, Peter & Nora Hayes of Ogdensburg, NY, and Pat & Diane Hayes of Clayton, NY. She had 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Beulah Hayes, Copenhagen, NY and Catherine Jamieson, Dayton Beach, FL, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her husbands, Richard and Lew, she was predeceased by her three brothers, Edward, Michael (Red), and Carl (Nub) Strauss.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial donations be made to either Alzheimer’s Assoc., CNY Chapter, 26000 US Rt. 11, #423, Evans Mills, NY 13637 or Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham St., Watertown, NY 13601. Condolences to the family may be made to www.cummingsfuneral.com.
