An environmental group in New York is accepting submissions from environmentally-conscious artists or laymen alike for a contest to name the new invasive species.
With names like the spiny water flea and "rock snot," the organisms come to New York's waterways — like the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario — by hitching a ride on ocean vessels. Often, they're sucked into the ship's ballast tanks and then discharged into local bodies of water. They can wreak devastation on native species.
Environmental Advocates/EPL wants you to come up with the next invasive species. The organization wants you to draw and name the newest species to threaten New York's waterways.
Submissions will be accepted until Halloween. You can email info@eany.org or visit the group's Facebook page.
