Mayor Jeff Graham posted something inappropriate on his blog, and unlike what usually happens when Hizzoner does so, the "MSM" is taking note and Mr. Graham is backtracking.
The mayor originally wrote "This is so gay" in reaction to a story about a weather channel wanting to name winter storms.
He changed it to say it's "out there" instead of gay, and then later changed it to say it's "so lame." Then he appended a note that said the following: "Due to a request from a Syracuse television station I changed use of the word "gay" to the synonym "lame". From dictionary.com
Slang: Often Disparaging and Offensive . awkward, stupid, or bad; lame: This game is really gay."
Here's a website for an advocacy organization that is trying to eliminate the use of the word "gay" as a synonym for deficiency.
"Using gay to mean dumb or stupid? Not cool," say famous basketball players, including Grant Hill.
I don't understand how posting the definition of "gay" as a synonym for stupid or lame explains it away. That's the point: It's offensive to equate someone's sexuality with lameness.
Mr. Graham later wrote that he didn't "touch the tar baby." I'm not sure what he means by that, but here's a Time magazine writeup on the phrase.
And here's yet another update post. It's not as much an apology as it is a "point taken" post. Mr. Graham blames the mainstream media for "hectoring" and admonishing him.
It's possible that if a Syracuse TV station contacted Mr. Graham about it, you'll see a story about it tonight. YNN is the only Syracuse station that's in Watertown.
