In the wake of a tough editorial about Republican Matt Doheny's campaign, the Republican of Watertown met privately with Johnson Newspaper Corp. publisher John B. Johnson Jr. this morning.

The editorial encouraged Mr. Doheny to spend time talking about issues that are important to Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.

Interestingly, yesterday, the Doheny campaign sent out a statement that was Fort Drum-related. I'm not a mind reader, so I don't know if that was a result of the editorial, but it was illuminating nonetheless. Mr. Doheny said he had to head off elsewhere, so he couldn't stop by my desk to chat. I caught up with him in the vestibule downstairs. It was raining, and it seemed he was waiting for something. I asked if he had time to chat. He patted me on the arm, said no, and walked out in the rain.
