In the coming weeks, Massena will be the site of various activities for sportsmen and women. The St. Lawrence River Walleye Association is holding a walleye tournament, the St. Lawrence County Trappers’ Association is conducting a trappers’ rendezvous, and the Massena R&G Club is hosting a gun show and flea market.

Walleye Challenge

The 11th annual St. Lawrence River Walleye Challenge Team Tournament is slated for Saturday, Aug. 11 at the Massena Intake Boat Launch. Sponsored by the St. Lawrence River Walleye Association, the event is a two-person team competition featuring payouts (based on number of teams competing) for the top four places: 50 percent and plaques for first place, 25 percent for second, 15 percent for third, and 10 percent for fourth.

Winning teams will be determined by the total weight of three walleyes. Numerous door prizes will also be awarded.

Registration and seminar will take place on Friday, Aug. 10 at the Massena Rod and Gun Club (Patterson Road) from 6-7 p.m. The tournament entry fee is $50 per team, and there is an additional $10 conservation fee per team (non-SLRWA members) to aid walleye-stocking efforts in the river.

Teams can also participate ($20) in the optional 100 percent payback Big Fish Contest. In addition to the cash and a plaque, a free mount of the winning fish in the Big Fish Contest will be awarded courtesy of Nature’s Trophies Bait and Tackle Taxidermy in Waddington. Tournament rules will be reviewed at the registration meeting, and teams will draw their boat numbers.

Fishing hours extend from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m., and all teams must be present in the water at the Massena Intake by 5:45 a.m. Tournament boundaries include both American and Canadian waters from the Iroquois Dam at Waddington to the topside of the Robert Moses Dam at Massena. In the case of bad weather, the rain date is Sunday, Aug. 11. Tournament organizers request safety, integrity, and sportsmanship from all participants.

Trappers’ Rendezvous

The St. Lawrence County Trappers’ Association is sponsoring the third annual Trappers’ Rendezvous on Saturday and Sunday at the Massena R&G Club located off state Route 37 on Nickerson Road. Proceeds from the event will be used to benefit the group’s college scholarship program and to send youths to conservation camps.

The weekend includes demonstrations, displays, selling and trading trapping supplies, games, refreshments, primitive camping ($20 for weekend), and restaurant and other clubhouse facilities.

Admission is $2, and children under 12 are admitted free. For more information, call Jim Aubrey at 389-5096 or visit www.stlawrencecountytrappers.webs.com.

Gun Show

The Massena R&G Club is hosting a Gun Show and Flea Market at the Nickerson Road Clubhouse on Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 4-5. The hours run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Bassmaster Championship

Even though college students have been home for two months now, students from 71 colleges and universities will be representing their schools this coming week in the Carhartt Bassmaster College National Championship in Little Rock, Ark. In addition to competing for a national title, student anglers will also be competing for a chance to fish in the 2013 Bassmaster Classic.

The 71 teams will fish the Arkansas River on Wednesday and Lake Maumelle on Friday.

On Friday, the field will be cut to four teams that will fish a to-be-determined water for the title. Then on Saturday and Sunday, the members of the four top teams will compete individually in a bracket format on unknown waters as they vie for the highly coveted, one available spot in the 2013 Bassmaster Classic.
