Russell's fundraising relies on PACs, unions

A snippet from my column that will run tomorrow-ish:
The vast majority of Assemblywoman Addie Russell's fundraising haul has come from unions, health-care organizations, law firms and political action committees, according to her campaign finance disclosures.
She raised $8,600 since the beginning of the year.
Of her take, only $200 — a single donation — came from an individual.
But it was more a matter of timing than priorities, Mrs. Russell told me. She explained that in the winter months, she’s in Albany, so that’s where she held a fundraiser. The summer and fall are more conducive to at-home fundraisers that could mean local bucks.
Even in the more local-friendly months, though, Mrs. Russell doesn’t do much fundraising among individuals. Since the beginning of 2011, Mrs. Russell has raised $754 from individuals, compared with $14,345 from organizations like PACs and unions. Donors include the New York Farm Bureau and NYSUT, the state’s teachers union.
She rejected the notion that people would glance askance at her reliance on that sort of fundraising.
“The donations that were made do represent a lot of people; unions represent vast union memberships that include memberships here in the north country,” she said.
For the rest of the year, said Mrs. Russell, who is running for her third term, she’ll focus on north country fundraising.
She has around $10,000 in her campaign coffers, and no Nov. 6 opponent.
