MASSENA Last weekends rain forced the Massena/Louisville Relay for Life to move indoors for the first time in its history, but the presence of a few raindrops couldnt dampen the spirits of those participating, who collectively raised nearly $70,000 for the American Cancer Society.
We still have donations coming in, said Laura E. Gregory, American Cancer Society St. Lawrence County community executive. Right now, were over $68,000.
This years event included 389 participants on 33 teams, plus 75 survivors. Ms. Gregory added survivors are considered special guests and counted separately from the other participants, noting the number of people present always exceeds the number of registered participants.
I would say we probably had around 600 people, she said.
While the move inside could have presented problems, Ms. Gregory said it went off without a hitch.
The amount collected surpassed last years total.
Ms. Gregory said those who would still like to donate to this years event can go to www.relayforlife.org/massenany or mail checks to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 517, Waddington, NY 13694. They should write Massena/Louisville Relay on the checks.
