PORT LEYDEN — Joseph S. Kraeger, 29, of 7931 Moose River Road, was jailed early Friday after being arrested by state police on eight charges in connection with a hostage situation.

Although few details were available from police, one of the charges is first-degree criminal use of a firearm. There was no indication that anybody was injured.

The hostage was his wife, according to a source who said no shots are believed to have been fired.

With bail set at $50,000 by Lowville Village Justice Patricia Yarina, Mr. Kraeger was placed in Lewis County jail, Lowville, about 5 a.m. Friday.

Other charges listed against him are first-degree burglary, first-degree unlawful imprisonment, first-degree criminal contempt, second-degree menacing, fourth-degree criminal mischief, second-degree criminal possession of a loaded weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.

Troopers responded to a report of a burglary in progress in the town of Lyonsdale at 10:23 p.m. Thursday, and the incident involved a domestic situation, according to police.

Mr. Kraeger was arrested just before midnight at his residence in an investigation conducted by the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Watertown. The Lewis County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the investigation.

Mr. Kraeger has a wife and three children, according to a report in the Times in March 2010 about his alleged involvement in a domestic fight.

Lewis County sheriff’s deputies arrested him on March 11 of this year following a brief pursuit on charges of reckless driving, failure to comply with police orders, failure to keep right, failure to use a designated lane and using a cellphone while driving.

He pleaded guilty to all the charges, was assessed fines and court fees totaling $750 and was sentenced to 15 days in jail.
