Kellie Greene's friends in Arizona are hosting a "meet and greet" in support of her Republican candidacy for Congress.
The event also demonstrates that Ms. Greene's current support system might be slightly disadvantaged: They live thousands of miles away.
"Kellie will be visiting Arizona next week partly to build a coalition of border security patriots to join forces in helping her bring a voice as a member of Congress to the north border crisis," the event page states.
A "suggested minimum contribution" for the Arizona fundraiser is $15 a person.
Ms. Greene, who is an Oswego County native, filed paperwork to become a candidate for Congress on Jan. 3. She has been telling people that she moved to Sackets from Arizona specifically to take on Matt Doheny, the Republican businessman of Watertown who is also vying for the GOP nod.
Rep. Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh, currently holds the seat.
A tea party-esque challenger is all just a little bit of history repeating in the vast, 11-county district. I don't think I need to relitigate the history for the readers of this blog. It suffices to say that this is the third time that a challenger putatively to the right of the establishment candidate has swooped in to try to carry the conservative mantle.
Both Mr. Doheny and Ms. Greene need to secure petitions to get on the ballot, but this is the most serious challenger that Mr. Doheny has seen so far — the first one that I know of, at least, to host a fundraiser.
Says the page touting the event, which seven people have pledged to attend: "It is a district that has a large conservative base, but went BLUE and now we are going to help Kellie make it patriotic RED once again!"
