The Journal in Ogdensburg is reporting that Republican Mayor Bill Nelson won by 11 votes over independent candidate Jack McGrath after absentee ballots were counted.
Mr. Nelson faced a tough re-election challenge after the 819 Knox St. controversy. A family was allowed to live rent- and tax-free for three years in the home, even as the city poured government dollars into fixing the place up. That didn't sit well in a town where many people are scraping to get by.
Mr. Nelson saved his electoral hide, in my opinion, by calling for the resignation of City Manager Art Sciorra (something that still has not come to pass). The investigation still hasn't been made public, despite the "best" efforts of some Council members. As with most things in this investigation, City Council is bumbling the issue, not really getting anything done, and talking out of both sides of their mouth.
