New Yorkers for Better Libraries has ranked all the legislators in the state, and north country reps fared pretty well.
Republican state Sens. Patty Ritchie and Joe Griffo got an A. Democratic Assemblywoman Addie Russell did, too. Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush, a Republican, got a B.
Check out the the rankings for yourself.
Libraries, of course, have been hit by funding cuts at every level: local, state, and when it comes to grants and the like, federal. A library in Norwood is basically on life support. The Ogdensburg library tried to go right to the taxpayers, but got rebuffed. Meanwhile, Watertown's library isn't open on Sundays, an enormous pet peeve of mine.
(Speaking of the Watertown library, if you want to find some gems in a sea of Danielle Steel and Tom Clancy, you have to check out the sale they have going on now. Thousands of books, 50 cents for paperback. I picked up The Bonfire of the Vanities, The Witches of Eastwick, and a Balzac story en francais over the weekend.)
