Doheny whacks Owens on Solyndra

Republican Matt Doheny is taking issue with Rep. Bill Owens' stance on government investment.
Mr. Doheny is looking to take on Mr. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, in the November 2012 race to decide who represents the north country in Congress. The Solyndra story — basically, the Obama administration gave a solar-panel manufacturer half a billion dollars, despite warnings that the company was rotting on the inside — has dogged the president, and Republicans have used it to attack Democrats in Congress. That includes Mr. Owens, who supported the stimulus bill that was the purse behind the Solyndra loan.
A statement from Mr. Doheny in response to a story I wrote about Mr. Owens says: "Private individuals are free (and encouraged) to make investments with their own money for the chance at big rewards. But taxpayers should not expect similarly risky bets to be placed on their behalf by members of Congress."
But, says Mr. Owens: "There is, in fact, a place for investment by the government."
That's not to say that Mr. Doheny reviles all government spending. He has bucked at defense cuts (without saying that they're a no go, per se) and doesn't rail against agriculture subsidies quite the way he takes issue with the Solyndra loan.
This is the second time Mr. Doheny has criticized his opponent, but not the first time he brought up Solyndra. In fact, he talked about it during the interview we had when he announced his candidacy.
